Rationale

3cmc Azorius enchantment that exiles a nonland permanent and all others sharing its name on ETB, returning them when it leaves. A premier catch-all removal piece in control and midrange; the mass-same-name clause is uniquely powerful against token armies and nontoken copies. Notably weak to bounce/flicker effects that reset the enchantment and return all exiled cards, making it riskier than traditional exile removal.

Learnings (3)

  • The 'all other permanents with the same name' clause means Detention Sphere is one of the few white-blue answers that can wipe an entire token army in one shot if all tokens share a name (e.g., Goblin tokens).

  • Detention Sphere is uniquely exploitable: if an opponent bounces or flickers it (even with Flickerwisp targeting it), all exiled permanents return immediately — this is a much larger drawback than standard exile removal.

  • Running multiple copies in 60-card formats is dangerous: Detention Sphere cannot target another Detention Sphere, so copies can sometimes strand each other or create naming-clause awkwardness.
