Rationale

Emil is a 3cmc 3/3 legendary Elf Druid that grants trample to all creatures you control with +1/+1 counters, and has a {4}{G} + tap activated ability to create a Fractal token sized by the number of differently named lands you control. The trample-grant is a solid lord-like effect for +1/+1 counter strategies, but the token-making ability is expensive, slow, and scales primarily in lands-matter or domain-style shells. In mono-green Commander, differently named lands is usually a small number, capping the Fractal's power unless you include a diverse nonbasic land suite.

Learnings (3)

  • Emil's Fractal token scales on 'differently named' lands, not just land count — in mono-green with mostly basic Forests, the token is often a 1/1 or 2/2, making the {4}{G}+tap cost a poor rate unless you deliberately run a varied nonbasic land package.

  • The trample-grant static ability applies to ALL creatures with +1/+1 counters you control, not just tokens Emil creates — pairing him with Hardened Scales, Ozolith, or persist/undying creatures can make an entire board of trampling threats cheaply.

  • Emil's color identity is mono-green, which limits access to the best +1/+1 counter synergies (Simic shells) and makes the differently-named-land clause harder to maximize compared to multicolor lands-matter commanders.
