Rationale

Villainous Wealth is a high-ceiling mana sink that exiles X cards from an opponent's library and lets you cast spells among them for free — rewarding large mana pools with explosive board swings off the opponent's own deck. It's a signature finisher in Sultai ramp-big-mana and control shells where accumulating 10+ mana is realistic; it scales particularly well at bracket 3-5 where opponents' libraries contain high-value spells. The three-color pip requirement (B+G+U) and sorcery speed make it a trap in anything but dedicated ramp or control, and the value is entirely dependent on what the opponent has in their deck.

Learnings (3)

  • Villainous Wealth's X is set at cast time, but the exiled spells are cast for free — this means you can cast spells with mana value UP TO X, not equal to X, enabling flexible value if the opponent's top cards are cheaper than X.

  • The card does NOT count as 'casting from exile' in the way some graveyard payoffs care about — the spells are simply cast, so any 'cast from exile' synergies (e.g. Prosper, Tome-Bound) DO trigger.

  • Against cEDH opponents running fast mana and tutors, Villainous Wealth for X=6+ can functionally win the game on the spot by casting opponents' combo pieces, making it disproportionately powerful at bracket 5 relative to its performance in casual pods.
