Rationale

Akul is a 5/5 flying trample threat at 4 mana (double B, double R) that doubles as a repeatable sacrifice outlet — sac three creatures to cheat any creature card from hand onto the battlefield. Signature in aristocrats and sacrifice shells that generate creature tokens to feed the cost, and in any strategy wanting to deploy massive creatures (dragons, eldrazi) at reduced cost. The double-pip BB RR requirement narrows it to dedicated Rakdos builds. Sorcery speed and once-per-turn limit its combo ceiling compared to free sacrifice outlets.

Learnings (3)

  • Akul's activated ability is a non-mana activated ability, not a triggered ability — it can't be cheated with cost-reduction effects like Heartless Summoning and is subject to Cursed Totem-style shutoff.

  • Sacrificing three creatures to deploy a creature from hand is effectively a 'free' Sneak Attack trigger if you have token generators — Rakdos sacrifice decks can use it every turn to recur reanimation targets from hand after looting them.

  • The BBRRR color-identity requirement (four pips across two colors, all double) is unusually steep for a 4cmc card and makes Akul significantly harder to hardcast in non-dedicated mana bases.
