Rationale

Assimilation Aegis is a 3cmc Equipment that ETB-exiles a creature (removal that returns when the Equipment leaves) and then transforms whatever creature it's equipped to into a copy of the exiled card — delivering both a removal spell and a clone effect in one artifact. It's a signature piece in equipment-voltron decks where it doubles as a threat converter, and shines in control/flicker shells that can repeatedly blink the Equipment to re-exile and re-copy. The exile is contingent on the Equipment remaining on the battlefield, making it vulnerable to bounce and sacrifice removal.

Learnings (3)

  • The copy effect is tied to the Equipment remaining attached — re-equipping to a different creature transfers the copy effect to the new host, and the equipped creature reverts to its normal self if the Equipment leaves or is moved.

  • Flickering the Equipment itself re-triggers the ETB exile, letting you swap which creature is exiled without losing the Equipment, making flicker synergy particularly potent.

  • Because the exile is an until-this-leaves-the-battlefield effect, opponents can 'rescue' their creature by destroying or bouncing the Equipment — this is a more exploitable downside than hard exile removal like Swords to Plowshares.
