Rationale

Ghired is a 3-mana haste commander who converts any nontoken creature into a tap ability that copies tokens that entered this turn, enabling explosive token doubling in Naya. Signature in tokens-go-wide and aristocrats shells where populating powerful tokens (e.g., Rhinos, Angels, Treasures) multiplies board presence rapidly. The constraint is "entered this turn" — you need to generate at least one token the same turn you want to copy it, adding a sequencing dependency.

Learnings (3)

  • The copy ability reads 'entered this turn' — you cannot use Ghired's tap ability to copy tokens that were already on the battlefield from a previous turn, so the strongest turns are those where you create multiple token types in one turn and then tap each nontoken creature to duplicate them.

  • Ghired pairs unusually well with creatures that themselves create tokens on ETB (like Avenger of Zendikar or Sundering Titan lines) — the ETB token and Ghired both land on the same turn, immediately enabling the tap ability for free value that turn.

  • Because the tap ability is granted to ALL nontoken creatures, wide creature boards become a parallel token-copying engine; this makes Ghired much stronger in populated boards and much weaker in games where your creatures have been removed.
