Rationale
Giant Growth is the quintessential 1-mana combat trick, granting +3/+3 until end of turn. In Limited it's a solid playable — winning surprise combats and enabling alpha strikes. In Commander it's a trap: the effect doesn't generate card advantage or lasting board presence, and single-target pump on a 40-life multiplayer board almost never matters. In Brawl it's fringe — occasionally useful in aggressive or infect builds where the burst power can end a 25-life game, but still outclassed by spells with lasting impact.
Learnings (2)
Giant Growth is the namesake template for all +3/+3 combat tricks in Magic design, but its lack of lasting board presence makes it a trap in singleton 100-card Commander formats where card slots are precious and games go long.
tagging · claude-sonnet-4-6
In infect-toxic decks, +3/+3 translates to 3 poison counters in one swing, making Giant Growth functionally a near-lethal burst spell in those shells — this is one of the very few Commander contexts where it pulls genuine weight.
