Rationale

Lord of Atlantis is THE defining Merfolk lord — 2cmc 2/2 that grants all other Merfolk +1/+1 and islandwalk, making them effectively unblockable against blue opponents. It is a signature inclusion in any Merfolk typal shell across formats; its power scales entirely with Merfolk density, making it dead weight outside that archetype. The UU pip cost is notable but expected in a mono-blue tribal build.

Learnings (3)

  • Islandwalk is a hidden aggro engine in competitive Merfolk: blue is the most common Commander color, meaning Lord of Atlantis's evasion grant is frequently relevant against 2-3 opponents at any given table.

  • Lord of Atlantis also buffs opponent's Merfolk due to the 'other Merfolk' wording not restricting to 'you control' — in a Merfolk mirror or against an opposing Merfolk tribal deck, it becomes a symmetric anthem.

  • In Commander, Lord of Atlantis pairs with Spreading Seas / Sea's Claim as a package: enchanting opponents' non-Islands converts them into Islands, turning islandwalk into near-universal unblockability for the whole team.
