Rationale

Marchesa is a 3cmc 3/4 that generates repeatable card selection (look at top 2, keep one) for {1} each time you commit a crime — targeting anything an opponent controls or owns. In Grixis spellslinger and control shells, nearly every spell commits a crime, making her a potent draw engine. She shines brightest in 1v1 Brawl where every interaction with the single opponent fuels her ability, and her 3/4 body is a meaningful threat at 25 life.

Learnings (3)

  • Crime triggers off targeting anything opponents control OR cards in their graveyards — so reanimating an opponent's creature, using graveyard hate like Faerie Macabre, or even Fateseal all trigger Marchesa, making anti-graveyard cards unusually synergistic here.

    tagging · claude-sonnet-4-6

  • The {1} payment is optional per trigger, so you can selectively filter only when mana is available, avoiding tempo loss on the turn you need all your mana for interaction.

  • In 1v1 Brawl, Marchesa's crime trigger fires on almost every meaningful interaction (removal, counterspells, discard), creating a card-advantage density that rivals Rhystic Study at a lower mana cost but with a recurring {1} activation tax.
