Rationale

Return to the Ranks is a convoke sorcery that mass-reanimates X creatures with MV 2 or less from your graveyard — a powerful recovery spell in creature-dense white decks. It shines in aristocrats and tokens-go-wide shells where small creatures die in bulk and surviving creatures can convoke the spell for near-free, and in hatebear/death-and-taxes shells stocked with cheap utility creatures. Control and ramp-big-mana shells rarely run enough cheap creatures to fuel it or fill the graveyard with the needed targets.

Learnings (3)

  • Convoke synergizes directly with the mass-recursion effect: if you have surviving creatures on board, you can tap them to pay for X, returning multiple fallen low-MV creatures simultaneously at little mana investment.

  • The MV 2-or-less restriction is strict — it misses most mid-to-late-game threats, making this card best in dedicated low-curve creature decks (weenies, hatebears, token strategies) rather than generic white recursion shells.

  • In aristocrats or tokens-go-wide decks, this card can function as a mid-combat reset: after a board wipe, even 1-2 surviving creatures can convoke several fallen 1-drops back immediately at sorcery speed on your next turn.
