Rationale

Rydia is a 2-mana Gruul commander/99 that offers landfall-looting for hand sculpting and a powerful Saga reanimation engine: pay X, tap to return a Saga of MV X from the graveyard with a finality counter (preventing further graveyard loops) and haste. She is a signature piece in Saga-matters and graveyard-matters shells that want to cheat expensive Sagas into play for immediate chapter-3 payoffs, but she needs a stocked graveyard and a critical mass of Sagas to function, making her a genuine build-around. Her ceiling is enormous (reanimating Sagas like The Eldest Reborn or Urza's Saga for instant value), but the sorcery-speed restriction and X-cost setup make her narrow and slow outside her dedicated shell.

Learnings (3)

  • The finality counter placed by Rydia's Summon ability prevents the reanimated Saga from ever going back to the graveyard and being recurred again, making each Saga a one-time reanimation target — plan your graveyard carefully and avoid spending Rydia's ability on low-impact Sagas.

  • Because Sagas enter with their first lore counter and then gain haste, they will immediately trigger Chapter I on ETB and begin advancing — pairing Rydia with Sagas that have strong Chapter I or Chapter III effects maximizes the haste grant and rapid chapter progression.

  • Rydia's landfall loot is a may-ability that replaces itself, making her excellent for filtering toward Sagas and lands without card disadvantage — she pairs naturally with fetch lands and land-ramp spells to sculpt hands while advancing Saga reanimation targets into the graveyard.
