Rationale

2cmc colorless artifact that blanket-suppresses all ETB triggers from creatures — one of the most punishing stax pieces in the format, locking out flicker, reanimator, and ETB-heavy creature strategies. Signature in stax-prison and also serves as a combo enabler (e.g., enabling creatures with otherwise-symmetrical ETB drawbacks like Phyrexian Dreadnought or Eater of Days). Symmetric effect means it devastates ETB-reliant pilots too, so it only belongs in decks that don't rely on ETBs themselves.

Learnings (3)

  • Torpor Orb enables otherwise-unplayable creatures with severe ETB drawbacks (e.g., Phyrexian Dreadnought sacrifices all your creatures on ETB — Torpor Orb suppresses that clause entirely, giving you an effectively free 12/12 trampler).

    tagging · claude-sonnet-4-6

  • The card is symmetric — it shuts off your own ETB triggers too, so it actively conflicts with any deck that relies on ETB value creatures (flickering, reanimating, or even just playing Mulldrifter-style cards).

  • In 1v1 Brawl, Torpor Orb is still strong but drops a tier because the table-wide effect taxes only one opponent instead of three, and many Brawl commanders don't rely on ETBs at all.
