Rationale

Doc Aurlock is a 2cmc 2/3 that reduces the cost of spells cast from the graveyard or exile by {2}, and also makes Plotting cards {2} cheaper — a powerful cost-reducer for graveyard-based spellslinger, reanimator, or combo shells that repeatedly cast from non-hand zones. At 2cmc in GU, it slots into efficient early-game setups for escape/flashback/rebound engines and Outlaws of Thunder Junction Plot synergies. Tier-2 rather than tier-1 because the card requires a deck built to exploit the specific zones (graveyard/exile/Plot), and does nothing standalone.

Learnings (3)

  • Doc Aurlock's cost reduction applies to ANY spell cast from the graveyard or exile (flashback, escape, rebound, suspend, cascade hits, etc.) — it is not limited to creatures or a specific card type, making it a broadly applicable engine in GU shells built around those mechanics.

  • The Plot cost reduction is uniquely relevant in Outlaws of Thunder Junction Commander builds; outside of that set's Plot mechanic, that half of the card is essentially blank in most Commander decks.

  • At 2 CMC in GU, Doc Aurlock can come down early before a reanimator or graveyard combo turn, shaving {2} off key escape or flashback finishers and enabling otherwise too-expensive recursive spells to resolve ahead of curve.
