Rationale

1cmc instant — destroy target creature or planeswalker; its controller may search for a basic land tapped. Path to Exile analog that hits planeswalkers instead of only creatures; trades the "exile" for "destroy" (reanimation risk) but gains the planeswalker clause. The land gift is the same tempo concession as Path, making it worse in aggressive shells but universally playable in control, midrange, and death-and-taxes.

Learnings (3)

  • Erode is a direct comparison to Path to Exile: both cost {W} and give the opponent a basic land tapped, but Erode uses destroy (vulnerable to indestructible) rather than exile, while gaining the ability to hit planeswalkers — making it slightly weaker against graveyard-heavy metas but broader in scope.

  • Because Erode uses 'destroy' rather than 'exile,' indestructible creatures and regenerating creatures completely blank it; in metas with Elesh Norn, Darksteel Colossus, or similar indestructible threats, Path to Exile is strictly superior.

  • The land-grant clause is 'may,' so opponents under mana pressure can decline — this rarely matters but occasionally relevant against decks trying to stay land-light.
