Rationale
Karn, Argent Defender is a 2-mana 1/3 artifact creature with a global static ability: artifacts and creatures entering the battlefield don't trigger abilities. This shuts down virtually every ETB-based strategy in the game, including flicker/blink combos, aristocrats death-triggers-on-entry, and combo lines relying on ETB chains (Panharmonicon, Felidar Guardian, etc.). Being an artifact creature itself makes it harder to remove with creature-only removal, and its legendary status allows it to serve as a commander. Its symmetric lock is uniquely punishing for ETB-heavy metas at brackets 3-5.
Learnings (3)
Karn's ability suppresses ETB triggers globally and symmetrically — this means it also shuts off your own ETB triggers, so it's best in shells that either have no ETB reliance or can toggle it off (e.g., sacrifice outlets, flicker of Karn itself).
tagging · claude-sonnet-4-6
As a colorless legendary artifact creature, Karn can be played in any Commander deck regardless of color identity, making it a potential stax piece even in mono-color or five-color builds that need ETB hate.

Unlike Hushbringer or Torpor Orb, Karn also suppresses artifact ETB triggers in addition to creature ETB triggers, which is relevant against artifact combo lines like Thassa's Oracle or Dockside Extortionist.
