Rationale

Patchwork Banner is a 3cmc colorless artifact that combines a tribal lord effect (+1/+1 to all creatures of the chosen type) with any-color mana fixing. It's a two-in-one staple for tribal Commander decks that also need color fixing, particularly useful in multicolor tribal shells. The tribe choice is locked in at ETB, so it requires meaningful creature-type density to earn the slot; without that density it's just an overcosted mana rock.

Learnings (3)

  • Patchwork Banner's tribe choice is made as it enters (a replacement-style ETB choice), meaning it can't be changed afterward — pick carefully if you run creature-type-changers or have a mixed-type board.

  • Because it both pumps creatures and taps for any color, it competes with Urza's Incubator (cost reducer) and Vanquisher's Banner (draw engine) in tribal builds — Banner's color fixing is its unique edge in mana-hungry multicolor tribes.

  • In a tribal deck with few off-type creatures, Patchwork Banner effectively combines a Coat of Arms lite with an Arcane Signet, making it efficient despite the 3-mana cost; but in non-tribal goodstuff it is strictly a worse Commander's Sphere.
