Rationale
Thought Monitor is a 2/2 flying Construct with Affinity for artifacts — in a dense artifact shell it often costs just 1-2 mana and immediately replaces itself with two cards, making it a value engine rather than a raw threat. It's a signature inclusion in artifact-matters decks (Urza, Emry, Breya-style shells) and sees fringe use in combo decks that flood the board with cheap artifacts. At its base cost of 7 it's unplayable, so it demands artifact density to function.
Learnings (3)
Thought Monitor's effective mana cost in a typical artifact-heavy Commander deck is often 1-2 mana, making it one of the best blue card-draw creatures in those shells despite its nominal 7-mana price tag.

Because Affinity counts artifacts you control at cast time (not when it resolves), bouncing your own artifacts in response can make this more expensive — and opponents can do the same by destroying your artifacts before resolution.

In Affinity/artifact-storm decks, Thought Monitor is frequently cast for free or near-free on the same turn as several other artifacts, functioning like a cantrip threat that also enables further chaining.
