Rationale

3cmc colorless artifact that grants all your lands the ability to tap for any color AND taps itself for any color. The premier color-fixing mana rock in multicolor Commander decks — it uniquely solves color-fixing rather than just producing raw mana, making it a staple in 3-5 color builds. Drops a tier in Brawl where 2-color decks often don't need the fixing and Arcane Signet is the default 2-mana rock.

Learnings (3)

  • Chromatic Lantern's static ability fixes ALL your lands (not just basics), meaning even color-locked dual lands like Shocklands can tap for any color — this is uniquely powerful in 4-5 color decks and distinguishes it from other fixing rocks.

    tagging · claude-sonnet-4-6

  • Unlike most mana rocks, Chromatic Lantern's value scales with the number of colors in your deck; in mono- or 2-color shells it's almost always strictly worse than Arcane Signet or a Talisman, making it a trap in those builds despite its ubiquitous reputation.

  • The land-fixing static ability is not a mana ability and can be responded to in theory, but the lands' own {T}: Add mana ability IS a mana ability and thus cannot be countered once Chromatic Lantern is in play.
