Rationale

4cmc sorcery that wipes all nonland permanents with MV ≤2 and converts each destroyed permanent into a {B} or {G} mana — making it simultaneously a sweeper and a mana ritual. Signature in stax-prison and control shells that want to punish mana-rock-heavy tables; the mana refund often makes it effectively free or profitable. Weak against token-go-wide and aristocrats decks that want their small permanents alive, and underwhelming if opponents have already deployed large threats past MV 2.

Learnings (3)

  • The mana generation from Culling Ritual is a mana ability that happens immediately after resolution — in a typical mid-game Commander pod full of mana rocks (Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, etc.), it commonly generates 6-10+ mana, enabling a same-turn haymaker that opponents cannot respond to.

  • Culling Ritual hits your OWN permanents too, so building around low-MV permanents (e.g., mana dorks, clue/treasure tokens) with Culling Ritual in the deck is dangerous unless you plan to rebuild with the mana generated.

  • In Brawl (1v1) the value drops significantly because there's only one opponent's worth of low-MV permanents to destroy, reducing the expected mana refund; it's still playable as asymmetric removal but loses the multi-target burst that makes it tier-1 in Commander.
