Rationale

Return the Favor is a 2-mana Spree instant offering spell copy and/or target redirection, both for {1} additional cost each. At minimum RR+1 to copy or redirect, or RRR+1+1 to do both, it gives red access to Twincast and Redirect effects on a single card. Signature in spellslinger and combo shells where copying key instants/sorceries or redirecting removal is high-value; the double-red pip and sorcery-line dependence on the board state limit it outside dedicated spell-focused decks.

Learnings (3)

  • Spree treats each '+' mode as an additional cost, so Return the Favor's base cost is {R}{R} and you must pay at least one mode ({1}); the minimum cast cost is {1}{R}{R}. Taking both modes costs {2}{R}{R} total.

  • The copy mode hits activated and triggered abilities in addition to instant and sorcery spells, making it broader than Twincast and relevant against non-spell combos (e.g., copying a planeswalker activation or an ETB trigger placed on the stack).

  • The redirect mode requires a spell or ability with exactly one target, so it cannot split targets on multi-target removal or redirect a spell that targets 'each' or 'any number' — evaluate carefully before including as counter-protection.
