Deck Guide

Why Play This Deck

Anim Pakal creates an exponentially scaling token engine that can overwhelm opponents through sheer numbers and burn damage. Each attack with non-Gnome creatures grows Anim Pakal's +1/+1 counter count, which directly translates to more Gnome tokens entering tapped and attacking. The deck leverages multiple ETB damage triggers like Impact Tremors and Reckless Fireweaver to convert each token wave into immediate damage, creating a dual-threat of combat pressure and burn reach that closes games by turn 6-7.

Play Summary

Deploy Anim Pakal on turn 3, then attack every turn to snowball the counter accumulation. Early creatures like Luminarch Aspirant and Rosie Cotton accelerate the counter growth beyond Anim Pakal's natural progression. Token doublers like Anointed Procession and Mondrak turn modest token creation into overwhelming board presence - with both in play, attacking with 3 counters creates 12 Gnomes instead of 3. The deck wins through combat damage or accumulated ETB damage from repeated token floods, with multiple sacrifice outlets providing flexibility against board wipes.

Key Synergies

Every Gnome token entering deals 1-2 damage to opponents, scaling with counter count. With 4 counters on Anim Pakal, each attack deals 8 damage before combat even begins.

Token doublers stack multiplicatively for exponential Gnome creation. With both in play, 3 counters creates 12 tokens instead of 3, turning modest attacks into overwhelming floods.

Accelerate counter accumulation beyond natural attack progression. Aspirant adds counters each upkeep while Rosie adds counters whenever tokens enter, creating explosive growth.

Each Gnome entering deals damage equal to its power and puts +1/+1 counters on all creatures, creating massive board states that scale exponentially with token count.

Sacrifice outlets provide protection against board wipes while generating value. Soulcleaver puts +1/+1 counters on Anim Pakal when creatures die, turning setbacks into acceleration.

Opening Hand

Keep hands with 2-4 lands, Anim Pakal or 2-3 mana acceleration, plus early interaction like Swords to Plowshares or Lightning Bolt. Prioritize hands that can deploy the commander on curve and immediately begin the attack sequence. Token doublers and ETB damage engines are strong secondary keeps. Avoid hands requiring more than 4 mana to function, as the deck's explosive potential diminishes significantly with delayed commander deployment. Mulligan hands without early plays or mana consistency.
